What is an Environmental
Control System?
An Environmental Control System
enables a physically disabled person to control their enviroment
by operating a wide range of domestic appliances and other vital
functions by remote control. The remote control can " learn"
infra red and/or radio signals which can then operate a variety
of devices. The remote control may be operated by direct access
or by scanning through a menu. A variety of switches can be
supplied to suit an individual abilities ie switches operated
by hand, foot, head, arm or chin and pneumatic switches operating
by sucking or blowing. Voice control system are also available.
Environmental Control Systems enhance
the ability of physically-disabled or elderly people, allowing
them to maintain their independence, and reduce their reliance
on the continuos help of a carer and/or family member. By doing
this, they improve the quality of life for the whole family.
What can be controlled?
Almost any item can be controlled - some examples are listed
below:

Control of door locks,
intercoms and alarm systems for security reasons

Control of hands free
telephone, nurse call systems and paging systems for communication
purposes

Control of power sockets,
beds, chairs, curtains etc for the comfort of the individual
